The German artist Base23 lives and works in Berlin. He expresses his creativity while spraying, painting, drawing and building his exceptional art works. It all started 1989 with the first point of contact to graffiti art and continued with the study of graphic design and typography. His sources of inspiration for his graffiti, ink drawings and cardboard installations derive from a wide array of sources. These include psychedelic art of the 1960s, underground comics from the 1970s, Japanese robots and robot toy packaging, experiences from his stay in Hongkong, sources from typography as well as traditional fabrics.
As an artist Base23 combines these inspirations into his unique graphic style. His passion for details can be found in Base23’s large murals as well as in his delicate works on paper and canvas. Vibrant colors imbue works with expression, intensity, and dynamic. His main intention is to counteract our fleeting way of observing in our image-drenched world and instead to invite the spectator to stay and contemplate over his works.
Base23 has been part of diverse group shows with well-known contemporary and urban art artist and solo shows all over the world.
Origin of the KOPERNIKUS 5 screen print edition Base23 printed together with whatsart was a hand painting on a vintage target paper. The artwork is based on the story that a greek astronom (ca. 300 b.c.) found out that planet earth is not the center of the universe. Till the 18th century the church denied all the theories and facts and stated that the earth is the center. In the end Nikolaus Kopernikus had enough proofs based on the greek astronom to finally tell the truth. The number five is the horizontal checksum of 23.
Base23 "hunts" for vintage paper on fleamarkets in Berlin or when he travels. The old paper gives his artworks an "old" appeal from a time where most of us not existed while his drawings use a contemporary language.Usually Base23 used to draw on the backside of the targets. After a while he came along old astronomy cards and drawings and the idea to chart his own universe was born. The artist takes us to his own universe and let us think about the past and the future, knowledge and truth, the volatility of the things and the meaning of express and belive in your ideas.
